Reading Capacity, Order and Lead-Time Claims in Company News

The numbers in company news that are easiest to misread are capacity, order backlog and lead time. They are usually not false; they are statements that come with conditions, and they lose their meaning once the conditions are stripped away.

Which kind of capacity is meant

Design capacity, installed line capacity and actual output are three different things. Design capacity describes the theoretical ceiling of a facility and its equipment; actual output also depends on shift patterns, incoming material supply, yield and the mix of orders. When a capacity figure appears, the first question is which layer it refers to and whether the measurement period is stated.

Orders have stages and scopes

Letters of intent, framework agreements, award notices and contracts in force sit at different stages, and they do not convert into revenue in the same way. Some announcements combine numbers from several stages, so it is worth separating them. Value figures also need to be read for whether tax is included and whether service and spare parts are inside the number.

Lead time depends on conditions

The delivery time of a standard machine and of a customised line are not comparable. Custom projects typically include concept review, tooling manufacture, on-site commissioning and acceptance, and any change in one of those stages moves the overall date. A lead time quoted without a configuration scope is a magnitude, not a commitment.

A safer way to quote

Record who said it, which stage it describes and under what conditions, rather than extracting a single figure. That record is what makes the claim usable later.
