How to Read Supplier Capacity Announcements

Capacity announcements appear whenever demand looks strong. They are worth reading carefully, because the unit of capacity is chosen by the announcer and the utilisation is usually left out.

Units differ

Capacity may be expressed in units, in lines, in shifts, in floor area or in revenue terms. A factory described as able to produce a certain number of units per year tells you nothing about the mix, the takt time or how much of that figure is a design ceiling. Two shifts may be assumed, or three, and the announcement rarely says which.

Utilisation is the missing half

Adding capacity matters far more when existing capacity is running near its limit. Without a utilisation figure, a large capacity number may describe idle space rather than a response to demand. It may also describe capacity that is already committed to other customers. Without utilisation, an expansion cannot be distinguished from a reallocation of an existing line.

Qualification takes time

New capacity also needs qualification: process stability, yield, and for regulated applications documentation and audits. The period between a building being finished and a line being qualified is often the part that slips, and it is rarely mentioned in the announcement.

What to record

Note the announced unit, the assumed product mix and the date the capacity is expected to be available. Then check later whether that date was met.
