What Robot Certification Headlines Often Omit

A certification headline usually contains a company name, a product family and a standard. The details that decide whether it is relevant to a specific purchase are usually further down, or absent.

Scope is the first question

Certificates cover defined configurations. A certificate for one variant does not extend to a larger model, a different tool or a modified safety circuit. Ask which configurations are covered and how the boundary is described, including which end effectors and safety options were part of the assessment. A change of gripper or guarding can move a machine outside the assessed configuration.

Edition and date

The standard edition matters, as does the issue date of the certificate. A certificate against a superseded edition may still be valid for an existing installation while being unsuitable for a new project.

Who issued it, and for what

Identify the issuing body and the type of assessment: a type examination, a conformity assessment or a self-declaration. These are not interchangeable, and a report covering a sample is not a certificate covering a product family.

Put it in the agreement

If a specific certificate is required for your project, name it, with its scope and edition, in the technical agreement so that its absence is detectable before delivery.
