Scheduling a Robot Deployment in a Live Facility

Published: Published on Zhilianhai

Split the work into dated phases

  • Survey: measure, photograph and document the existing cell.
  • Off-site build: assemble and test the cell at the integrator, not on your floor.
  • Civil and utility work: finished before the robot arrives.
  • Commissioning window: the shortest possible production interruption, planned with operations.
  • Run-in: production hours with a supervisor, not a demo.

Plan the shutdown window properly

Commissioning always needs some production time. Estimate it, add a margin, and agree the exact start and end with the production manager in writing. A cell installed during a holiday shutdown that overruns into the next production week costs more than the integration itself.

Work the second shift

Most deployment surprises appear when the day shift has gone home: night lighting, temperature drift, different material batches. Run at least one full night shift before handover, with the maintenance contactable.
