Choosing the Right Robot for a Greenfield Cell

Published: Published on Zhilianhai

Start from the material flow

In a new cell the robot is the most flexible element, so design the flow first: where does the part enter, where does it leave, where does scrap go, and where do people stand. Only then pick the machine that reaches all of those points comfortably.

Leave room for the second version

  • Design the cell for the product you expect in three years, not only today's part.
  • Keep at least one empty station or conveyor spur for later equipment.
  • Route utilities to a point you can extend without re-laying cable.

A greenfield cell is the cheapest place to buy flexibility — every metre of extra space and every spare I/O point costs a fraction of retrofitting later.
