Steel Coil Marking Robots: Traceability and Safety Checks

Published: Published on Zhilianhai

Marking steel coils connects a physical product to production and logistics records, but heavy, sharp and variable-size coils create challenges for automation. A Universal Robots customer case, listed by the supplier in October 2025, describes robotic paint marking at Brazil's USIMINAS. This historical case provides a basis for examining traceability and cell design, rather than a new deployment announcement. Published 2026-10-31 04:12:27 -04:00 (America/New_York).

From an identification requirement to a robot task

The supplier says the previous coil-marking system used mechanical rollers and servomotors, and that the new application uses a collaborative robot to apply paint. It describes the ability to mark text, codes and vector graphics, and reports savings in paint for the customer. The claimed savings depend on the original process and should not be treated as a general estimate.

Start a project by specifying which identification must be readable, at what distance and through which subsequent processes. A mark that looks clear immediately after application may become less legible after handling, storage or exposure to the environment. Include the needs of downstream operators and scanners in the requirements.

Test coil variation and surface conditions

Provide representative coils across the expected size range. Check positioning variation, surface finish, oil, scale and temperature within the limits of the intended process. Ask how the system determines where the coil is and what it does if the mark area cannot be reached or the product is not correctly positioned.

Confirm the paint and application method with the steel producer and downstream users. Trial marking on realistic surfaces, then inspect adhesion and readability after the handling and storage conditions the product will encounter. Define how an unreadable or incomplete mark is detected and corrected.

Connect the mark to the right record

A readable code is only useful if it points to the correct coil. Agree which system supplies the identification, how the robot receives it and how a successful marking is confirmed. Test mismatched data, duplicate requests and communication failures. The process should prevent a coil from being released with the wrong identity.

Keep an audit trail of the job, program version, operator interventions and verification result. If a mark must be reapplied, establish whether the first mark is removed, covered or recorded. These procedures help maintain traceability during rework and avoid confusion later in the supply chain.

Plan for safety and maintenance

Heavy coils, sharp edges, moving equipment and paint handling require a site-specific risk assessment. Collaborative robot features do not remove the need to evaluate the whole cell, including access, isolation, ventilation and recovery after a fault. Qualified plant personnel should approve the layout and operating procedures.

Compare good marks per shift, rework, consumables and downtime with the existing process. Include sensors, paint equipment, integration, training and support in the budget. A representative pilot provides more useful evidence than applying the supplier's reported results directly to another steelworks.

Agree on support after commissioning

Request a maintenance schedule for the paint delivery equipment and any sensors used to locate the coil. Identify who checks mark quality at shift changes and who can approve a revised marking program. The handover should include spare parts, cleaning instructions and a safe manual fallback for cases the automatic station cannot handle.
